How to Identify Scorpions

Scorpions are primarily distinguishable by their crab-like front pincers, and their long tail that curves over their back, ending in a sharp hook-like stinger. They range in size from very small (< 1") to nearly 4" long.

Scorpions are mostly nocturnal so they're most often seen at night. They often enter houses to stay cool in the summer.

Health Risks of Scorpions

The sting of a scorpion is like having a hot match stuck on your flesh, a very painful sting. Some people have an allergic reaction to their venom. They can crawl into clothing and footwear, causing painful stings when inadvertently coming into contact with them.

Scorpions can be harmful for many reasons, including:

  • Health hazards: Scorpions are venomous and their sting can be painful and potentially dangerous, especially for young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
  • Fear factor: Scorpions can be frightening and cause anxiety, especially when they are seen in or around homes.
  • Property damage: Scorpions can damage insulation, wall voids, and other areas in homes as they look for shelter and food.
